500th Post

I just realized I missed my ‘blog-iversary’ a couple of weeks ago (Feb 8th)… can you believe this year makes 4 years of Bruises and Bows?! I wanted to let y’all know I really appreciate you keeping up with our family through the years! Your comments and encouragement on Blogger and on Facebook really give me the extra nudge to sit at the computer and put it all out there.  I am really fortunate to be able to document our lives this way…  This blog has followed us through 3 moves, 2 pregnancies and over 1/2 of our married life. Thank you for being my support system through all of it! I just love looking back at old posts and pictures…

When I looked up in blogger to find out when was the exact date I started the blog I noticed that I had posted 499 times… so this will be my 500th post!! Cheers!

Our precious little Valentine!

We are thrilled to announce:

we are expecting another baby!

Snapshot_20120213

I am 8 weeks along, due in September and absolutely over-the-moon thrilled!

Some frequent questions… just in case you’re also wondering:

was this planned? Yes, actually we had been hoping and praying for another baby since August – but God chose this to be the perfect time for us.

Will you deliver here or there? We plan on delivering in dubai since Audrey will be in school… the hospital facilities, delivery doctors & nurses are of better quality than abu dhabi, but the prenatal care will be done here in ad and are very satisfied with the doctor we have chosen here… {a german lady}.. I have a little trouble understanding her, but I’m not overly worried since I’ve kinda done this before.  however, Charles does say that he is disappointed that this child will not be able to run for president since he/she wasn’t born in the usa… hilarious.

are you still going to go to the usa for the summer? of course. we wouldn’t miss it and are so thankful that we can spend a long wonderful summer with our families before ours changes significantly.

are you going to find out what it is? yes, definitely… I cannot help it, I’m a planner – and besides, if I didn’t find out it would completely hinder my shopping while in the usa this summer. totally unacceptable Smile

How are you feeling? I am experiencing normal first trimester stuff… queasiness, tired, etc.. just enough to let me know that things are happening with pregnancy, but not to the point of misery.  after seeing and hearing the heartbeat I am very relieved and super excited!

what did the kids say? will is clueless {shocker} but Audrey's reaction will bless my heart forever.  she was so happy she cried. twice.

adorable!

I guess on the third your body goes into “auto pilot” mode and just BAM pops out?! whoa mama!!

what a wonderful bump!

and last, but not least… I wanted to share with y’all my prayer that I rolled up tightly and placed in the “wall” on our recent vacation …and just 25 days later I was overjoyed by the answer… a positive test that dropped me to my knees!

Father / Daughter Dance

The Girl Scouts put on a Father Daughter dance every year and it truly is one of the highlights of Audrey’s year.  She has been looking forward to this for months and was beyond thrilled that “Today is the day!”  She is there now with Charles and I just can’t wait to hear all about it when they return.  Since my wonderful friend, Nancy was the chair-lady of this event, I was very involved in the last few weeks trying to help out with the prep work for the dance.  Here are some pictures of Audrey and Charles… maybe I’ll feel like writing more about the details of the dance later, but for now, I’m zapped!  I started my day making 3 gallons of icing and piping 160 cupcakes… whew! Then after a couple hours of decorating for the dance, I rushed home in time to bring Audrey to get a manicure – her only request was to have French manicure like mama does.  she thought she was BIG stuff!.. afterwards I got her bathed, fixed her hair and dressed/ ready and out the door with daddy.

I was totally hands off when it came to her special night and let her pick whatever dress she wanted to wear, her shoes.. notice the gold high heels..ha. and honored her requests for her hair and of course her nails…. I enjoy giving her room to show her own style {within reason} and try often to give her opportunities to make choices.  My little girl is getting so big!

One Year

Today marks exactly 1 year since we left the USA and moved to the UAE

wow! What a difference a year makes!

This year has been  such a wild ride – so many highs and lows and everything in between.  I have had joy, pain, comfort, loneliness,  felt empty and full, heartache and happiness.  We have experienced more in one year than most do in lifetime.  We have camped in the desert, dune bashed twice, snow skied indoors, been to the top of the worlds tallest building as well as the lowest point on Earth (dead sea), taken 10 flights with 2 kids, rode camels, vacationed in Paris & enjoyed the magic of Disneyland, traveled to Jordan and had such an adventure horseback riding in Petra, then in Israel where we saw things that will continue to blow our minds forever.

As I see new people come into Abu Dhabi and reflect back on how it was for me one year ago, I realize how hard it truly was  {much of it I didn’t want to post on the blog as to not look like a complainer}.  The difficulty of adjustment to a new culture and country can never be overestimated but it is something I am forever grateful for.

The best way to deal with adjustment for me was just eventually erasing expectation.  As Americans we are used to so many conveniences and have a pretty high baseline for housing, customer service and just overall ease of life.  Wiping those away and realizing that life here doesn’t work like that and no hissy fit that I can throw would ever change that.  Adjusting expectations to  like, “zero” set myself for less disappointment, fewer frustrating days and overall a more positive attitude.

here is my Expat Adaptation formula:

New Reality  - (minus) Expectations = Level of Happiness During Change

Ha! hopefully I’ll never have to use it again Smile

So how are things now? after a year of stretching, growing and learning…..? Really good.  I must say. It is “normal” and we do REALLY enjoy it.   A very different normal than my Texas normal, but a new normal, indeed.  I still meal plan, grocery shop, do drop offs, hang out with friends, play with the kids, go to bible study, cook dinner etc. but I don’t do any cleaning or laundry which is totally awesome.  We regularly go to the beach, have hours upon hours of playing outside and volunteer a lot of my time.  We enjoy doing all that Abu Dhabi has to offer and are having lots of fun.

The days whip around fast here and things still take longer to do here than in the states, but I expect it.  Some days I have absolutely nothing to do and others so full I don’t have a minute to spare.  We have made wonderful friends to do life with here, as well as make time for each other as husband and wife.  I am so thankful that God put me thru so many trials and challenges at once – it has produced in me a faith without fret… something that I can trust in for many years to come.

One {MAJOR} thing that I will never get used to is the distance and time difference from our families.  Even though life here is really good, I don’t want it forever.  The thing that gets me thru is knowing it is temporary.  Nothing can make up for the ‘far-ness’ from family/friends and the daily interactions that you have to give up…. and no amount of adventure can fully distract your heartache for your loved ones.  I am so thankful for my sister’s visit to Abu Dhabi this year! I know we won’t have as many visitors as our other expat friends do just based on our families circumstances – but it meant the world to me that she spent her time, money and vacation days to hang with us in the desert! Truly a highlight of my year.

Who knows what this year will hold for us here half way around the world…. One thing I do know is that we are enjoying the cards we’ve been dealt.

Cheers!!, to one year down, trusting in God’s plan and taking one HUGE leap of faith really, really far out of my comfort zone.
