Thumbs Up - or Thumbs Down?

The last couple of days I've noticed that when William has lost his paci he has been improvising with his thumb to soothe himself only at naptimes... Not sure if I should let him have it or try and break that habit before it is too late... I was a thumb sucker when I was young and embarrasingly enough didn't stop until I was probably in the second grade!! another interesting tid bit - i sucked my right thumb and wrapped my pointer finger around my nose like he is doing.. hilarious!

any advice mamas? (or papas)?

I have one thumb sucker and two binky suckers. My thumb sucker is by far my best sleeper!! He is always comfortable and content. I have never had a problem with it but he will be five next month and I am starting to get worried. But he knows he can only do it when he sleeps. Besides, it is presious:) They both ruin their teeth too. Hope that helps!

Both of my kids started sucking their thumbs about that age and both of them gave it up by 8 months. I like it better than the paci b/c it doesn't fall out and leave one screaming in the middle of the night. However, I have heard it is a harder habit to break.

Ok that is way to cute! I sucked my thumb, too. Mom says I stopped by kindergarten--I think maybe the thumb is better b/c you don't have to keep up with pacis..or keep buying them when you lose them like us!

I am not a mom, but I am a NICU nurse & and ex-thumb sucker. I say let him do what makes him happy. I sucked my thumb til age 8 and turned out great! No issues. Paci is definitely easier to get rid of, but I think babies that can self soothe are so much easier than those that are addicted to the paci!!

Too cute!! Harvey sucked his thumb and started at about William's age. He gave it up at about 10 months and moved on to the "ca ca" (still don't know why he calls it that!) but I agree it was WAY easier to let him self-soothe with his thumb instead of waking up screaming when his paci fell out... and I'm all for anything that helps them sleep better... and longer!!

He's so beautiful! Such a sweet picture! I wasn't a thumb sucker, but Joseph was. No issues with him. My thoughts: thumb sucking was here before pacis .. let him be if he's happy, you can always break him later! Glad ya'll are doing well .. we're still in the same 'ole boat.

I was a thumb sucker til about the same age as you. John Paul never sucked his thumb nor did he take a passy. Both have pros and cons. I hear some moms say "you can take away a passy, but not a thumb" to which I respond in my head "but I don't care if he sucks his thumb." A self-soother is, in my opinion, the better way to go. One day at a time, Christa!
