Advent Conspiracy - Love This!

*copied from their website: http://www.adventconspiracy.org/

Give "Presence"
The story of Christ's birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love.
So, what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists.
And when it's all over, many of us are left with presents to return, looming debt that will take months to pay off, and this empty feeling of missed purpose. Is this what we really want out of Christmas?
What if Christmas became a world-changing event again?
Welcome to Advent Conspiracy

* Charles and I have decided to start early about keeping the meaning of Christmas first and foremost with our family.  We have asked Santa Clause to only send Audrey & Will 3 gifts each year since baby Jesus recieved 3 gifts.  We feel that this limit will keep the holiday from escalating into a  gimme gimme gimme season.  We also will require Audrey to choose 3 toys that she is willing to part with for other children that are in need.  I plan on taking her & her 3 old toys to a donation center and let her hand them over.  We will make a birthday cake for Jesus on Christmas Eve, let her decorate it and then read the Christmas story out of her children's bible.   We hope that by starting early we can instill some of this as our tradition and hopefully keep the excessiveness at bay.  Wish us luck!

That is awesome Christa. We are doing the 3 gifts as well - I love the give 3 gifts. AWESOME.
This is right in line with my lesson on Mark 1 that I am teaching this Sunday which I am talking about 2 words, "Jesus Came."

I'm so glad to happen upon your Advent post and wonderful video. I love the idea of "conspiracy." I'm so happy when I hear others are being so intentional and simplistic in their traditions.

That is such a great idea! I am guilty of almost dreading Christmas because it becomes about what gifts to get everyone, when none of us really needs anything material whatsoever. I love how you are making it exciting, yet keeping the true meaning prevalent!

I think you and your husband are very smart to start this tradition in your home. The Lord will surely bless you. My kids are 9 and 14 and they are pretty good about not expecting "things" but I can tell the older they get the more expensive Christmas could easily become. And the true meaning can get lost in the midst of the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping. There's definitely room for improvement in our family as far as making certain that Christmas is about Christ. Thanks for the reminder.

Christa,

I am soo glad to hear that you are doing this. Although I do not have my own children yet, I fully intend to make sure they understand the TRUE meaning of Christmas. So many children get wrapped up (literally) in "wanting" and "expecting" and learn little about giving.
